Chiropractic Under Attack in Texas
news
Dr. William Morgan
The scope of practice and, essentially, the ability to practice chiropractic is under attack in the Lone Star State. The medical lobby has initiated a coordinated, synchronized, complex, and multi-front assault on the practice of chiropractic. There have been several initiatives directed at removing “diagnosis” from the scope, eliminating the treatment of neurological conditions, and even an effort to eliminate the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners. The attacks have included both legislative efforts and lawsuits, and this overt power play is reminiscent of the AMA’s attempts to subdue chiropractic in the 1960s.
I should note that the efforts of the Texas Medical Association are aimed at removing all diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions to include the vertebral subluxation.
Texas politics are unique and complicated to begin with, but this year there was a convergence of events which put die medical lobby in an advantageous position to politically disrupt the profession of chiropractic in Texas. I will attempt to explain the details of this battle in a subsequent article, but suffice it to say
that we have a real threat to the future of chiropractic in Texas, and the outcome of this battle will have national and international repercussions.
What can you do?
The Texas Chiropractic Association (TCA) is taking the lead in this fight and has won early victories which have been profound, but the biggest fight is yet to come and resources are limited. The TCA needs donations now. The Texas legislative session runs for only five to six months and takes place every other year, so donations are needed immediately. Please come to the aid of the patients of Texas by donating to TCA’s legislative and legal efforts through the Chiropractic Development Initiative (CDI): www.chirotexas.org/CDI
